Café Eclectic – the Montclair Destination Moves On

Pic of Cafe Eclectic

Café Eclectic, the popular, dark, cozy, and rather eccentric looking lair known for brewing rich coffee (before a Star Bucks was in town) has ceased operations. This Montclair meeting spot known for its tasty desserts and flavorful coffee was reportedly closing its doors December 31st after 15 years in business. However the cafe closed in early December.

According to the owner he "was tired of fighting legally to stay and wanted to move on." An inside source also stated "The Owner may open up something similar in a different location in the future." But right now the owner has other business interests.” The Café was almost a cultural institution in Montclair, New Jersey, with art exhibits, bizarre scenery, and creative props.

It even presented spoken word and other creative events. Of course couples have met at the café and some have even got married. Patrons have done business deals and important personal meetings at Café Eclectic which of course inspires warm memories in Montclair.

The Café is rumored to have been forced out by the Owners of Cuban Pete's Restaurant, who own the building and are looking to get higher market rents. This unique establishment offered upscale coffee, teas, and desserts in Montclair, NJ long before there was a Star Bucks or similar place in town.

This pioneering cafe in the center of town may be moving on but it will not be soon forgotten.

Most people would never get married and one day want to see it end in divorce. In addition to the emotional angst of going through a divorce it is very complex and challenging dealing with other personal and family issues.

Meet the Designer

Picture of Yolanda Berry

Yolanda Berry has always had a creative spirit. Ms. Berry, a Montclair Business women, is a self taught artist who currently lives in Northern New Jersey.

She noticed that there was a lack of earrings in the marketplace which she liked. This was prior to the explosion of chandelier earrings in the fashion industry.

Since she could not find anything in the stores that she wanted to buy, Yolanda got the idea to design her own jewelry and ventured into an art supply store and began making her own jewelry. Check out her Jewelry Creations.

Eventually, she began going to book stores to research and read bead magazines to gain more information about the art of design. She shared her love of jewelry with family and friends who encouraged her to develop her skills and sell her craft to a broader audience. The internet became a valuable resource to promote her business.

She is inspired by color, texture, form and patterns. She enjoys working with several types of materials including Swarovski crystals, glass and seed beads as well as wire wrapping. Yolanda defines her jewelry as contemporary, elegant and traditional. She makes a variety of designs that will suit your personality and style.

She does not exactly have a specific idea in mind until she starts mixing materials to create a piece of jewelry. She simply is lead by her creativity and passion for design.

Her interest also includes writing, photography, graphic arts, social media, acrylic and watercolor painting.

She believes it’s important to follow your bliss and do something that you love to do that brings you joy. To Purchase Jewelry go to Yolanda's Esty Shop

Johari Boutique Moves to Bloomfield Avenue

Picture of Johari Boutique

Deborah Furr, owner of Johari, recently made a quick and business savvy move. She grabbed an increasingly visible Bloomfield Avenue store front when she heard it became available. After moving from her less visible South Park street location Ms. Furr is showcasing her new boutique with subtle but powerful energy.

Johari which has been a retailer in Montclair for over a decade, is poised to build on their success. Deborah and her staff have created a mesmerizing new location.

If the look of the upscale boutique is any indication of the future - Johari will continue to do well. Ms. Furr's new boutique offers a shopping experience that makes it a pleasure to browse or shop.

Deborah obviously has a knack for merchandising in that her retail shop is nicely laid out, bright, chic, and inviting. The trendy retail establishment specializes in beautiful lingerie, swimsuits, lounge wear, hats, stockings, and other things to make ladies look sexy and beautiful.

She has nice products for a range of sizes. Also her staff is very amiable. We applaud this forward move for a great retail establishment. Johari is located at 465 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, New Jersey, 07042. 973-744-8070.

Hip Hop Clothes to Montclair

Montclair is still a destination for diversity despite NYC flight and resulting gentrification. It even has a place for hip hop and urban clothing stores amid it’s posh clothiers and upscale restaurants. Two noteworthy shops offering urban clothing are Takeover and 321.

Takeover, skews more to the urban athletic styles of Nike with some youth orientated active wear as well. Their clothing is contemporary in design with an edgy look.

Montclair Mayor Forges Cultural and
Biz Ties with ChinaPicture of Montclair Mayor Jerry Fried

Montclair Mayor Jerry Fried is an advocate of cultural and business exchange between Montclair, New Jersey and Sista Cities in China. The major has taken a small number of trips to various parts of China and is optimistic about the benefits of cultural exchange between our town and other areas in China.

Montclair is known for it's diversity and therefore, seems to be a great place to foster cultural exchange with other countries. Mayor Fried also references that Montclair, New Jersey has been doing an educational exchange with Chinese students living with families in Montclair.

The Mayor recently meet with a concerned group of Montclair residents and Chinese entrepreneurs to work through the issues of:

  • "what excites individuals about exchanges with China?

  • In the next year would a wildly successful China exchange program look like in to attendees? and

  • What concerns residents about the China exchange programs?"

Two of the points we raised with Mayor Fried were the need of an organization formed in Montclair to help with commerce with China and for children from diverse backgrounds and abilities to visit China for cultural exchanges.

Studio Montclair Reception
The Value of Trees

Studio Montclair Inc. (SMI) announces “The Value of Trees,” featuring the work of Marcie Cooperman, that is part of SMI’s annual “Meet the Artist” exhibition and program. The exhibit opens on November 3 and runs until November 28, 2011, at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue, Montclair, NJ. An opening reception will be held on November 3, 2011 from 6 to 9 pm. Ms. Cooperman will give a presentation on color theory at 7 pm.

Believing that line, texture, and color have the power to reveal an artist’s inner state, Cooperman visually combines these elements to tell a story about particular places and times. In the paintings in the exhibition, she depicts landscapes imbued with personal emotion.

Presenting eerie lines with withdrawn colors or complicated palettes with soothing textures, Cooperman utilizes contrasts and juxtapositions to paint the landscape of her physical and emotional life.
